Project description
Steam-producing polymers in low voltage switching devices
American College Scholarships Progress in materials science today opened up new possibilities for developing more efficient components, economical and reliable electric power system. This project will investigate the physics, chemistry and effects of the steam generation of polymeric materials used in low voltage power switching devices (such as breakers, contactors, etc.). This project is part of a multidisciplinary research initiative between KTH and industry in fields such as gas discharge physics, electrical engineering, scientific computing and materials science, oriented to increase the power switching devices in low voltage applications. Specifically, the research requires intensive high-power testing, chemical analysis of surface samples tested, and the development of physical understanding of the processes involved in the implementation and effects of electric arc in electrical switching devices.
