PhD student American College Scholarships in Electrical Engineering

KTH American College Scholarships is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, and architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. KTH has 13 344 full-time equivalent students, of whom 6955 are in degree (first) level, while 5545 are in Master (second) level. In addition, the 1314 is a full-time equivalent students on doctoral studies (third) level and 3900 employees.

American College Scholarships School of Electrical Engineering conducts research and education in the field of electrical engineering, systems engineering, information and communication theory, space and fusion plasma physics, and electrical power engineering. 300 people work in a creative and dynamic environment, of which half Ph.D. students, many from other countries. Our research projects conducted in close collaboration with industry partners and with research colleagues from Sweden and other countries. Schools are responsible for educating civil engineers in electrical engineering and five master's programs of interest and who have close relationships with our key areas.

American College Scholarships Scientific and technical activities of the laboratory electromagnetic techniques include electromagnetic field theory and the basic physical and technical fundamentals for design of electrical devices. This research lab group is working with electromagnetic theory, antenna design, diagnostic techniques for power, isolation modeling and measurements of magnetic and superconducting materials, the application of centralized asset management for electric power system reliability, and electromagnetic compatibility.

Project description

Steam-producing polymers in low voltage switching devices

American College Scholarships Progress in materials science today opened up new possibilities for developing more efficient components, economical and reliable electric power system. This project will investigate the physics, chemistry and effects of the steam generation of polymeric materials used in low voltage power switching devices (such as breakers, contactors, etc.). This project is part of a multidisciplinary research initiative between KTH and industry in fields such as gas discharge physics, electrical engineering, scientific computing and materials science, oriented to increase the power switching devices in low voltage applications. Specifically, the research requires intensive high-power testing, chemical analysis of surface samples tested, and the development of physical understanding of the processes involved in the implementation and effects of electric arc in electrical switching devices.
